Not every project needs to be a full rebuild. If the layout basically works and the cabinetry is sound, a great deal can be achieved without touching the structure at all.
Keep the layout, change the surfaces
Leaving plumbing and electrical where they are removes the most expensive category of work from the job. New counters, a new backsplash, refreshed cabinetry and new hardware can transform a kitchen without a single pipe moving.
Lighting is the cheapest transformation there is
Most dated kitchens are simply badly lit. Adding under-cabinet lighting, replacing a central fitting with something intentional and layering in a dimmable circuit changes how the whole room reads, for a fraction of what new cabinetry costs.
In bathrooms, swap rather than move
Replacing a vanity, mirror, lighting and fittings while leaving the shower and toilet where they sit gives most of the visual gain for much less. Retiling just the shower, rather than the whole room, is another sensible place to draw the line.
Choose one thing to be special
A budget stretched evenly across a room tends to feel flat. Pick one element to spend on, a backsplash, a vanity, a light fitting, and let everything else support it. That is usually what people remember about a room anyway.
